Madhya Pradesh Builds Forest Schools for Baiga Tribal Children

In a bid to make education culturally relevant, Madhya Pradesh’s Tribal Welfare Department has established “Forest Schools” for Baiga children in Dindori and Mandla districts. These schools operate near forest villages and teach core subjects through local idioms, stories, and nature-based learning. The curriculum integrates traditional knowledge of flora, fauna, and forest cycles. Teachers are often from the same community and receive training in bilingual pedagogy. School buildings are eco-structures using mud, bamboo, and thatch. Attendance rates have jumped as children feel connected to their environment and identity. The model is now being proposed for Gond and Sahariya communities as well.
