Punjab Tests Community-Managed Solar Cold Storage for Horticulture

To support farmers growing perishables like citrus and guava, Punjab has rolled out community-managed solar-powered cold storage units. Located in rural thrust areas, each unit combines solar arrays with battery backup to maintain 4–6°C storage. Members share access via time-slots, reducing wastage from delayed sales. Input costs are recovered by small fees, making the model financially viable. Farmers report 25% lower post-harvest loss. The unit includes packing spaces and real-time temperature tracking. The approach enhances farm incomes and encourages small-scale horticulture.
