Rajasthan’s Forest Department has installed thermal-imaging cameras atop sand dunes in wildlife conservation zones like the Desert National Park. These cameras autonomously detect sudden hotspots—indicating wildfires—in remote desert areas before they spread. When a hotspot is detected, teams receive GPS alerts and drone-assisted water drops are dispatched. Over the first dry season, over 12 minor fires were preemptively put out, and no significant wildfire incidents occurred. The system runs on solar power and relays data to district disaster control rooms. Collaboration with community shepherds ensures quick response in hard-to-reach terrain. This pioneering approach is being expanded to 15 more desert reserves to guard against increasing fire risks due to rising temperatures.
