The Chennai City Municipal Corporation has piloted permeable pavements in flood-prone neighborhoods of Teynampet and Adyar. Made with recycled plastic aggregate and porous concrete, these pavements capture rainwater and reduce runoff while supporting pedestrian traffic. Embedded sensors monitor water percolation and notify residents via an app when saturated. After two monsoon events, runoff decreased by 45% and streets stayed visibly drier. The micro-infrastructure is inexpensive and easy to install as a retrofit. Officials plan to scale to 50 kilometers of residential streets, reducing urban flooding and replenishing groundwater resources.
