Karnataka Launches Edible Insect Protein Farming to Combat Malnutrition

In a novel nutrition and sustainability initiative, Karnataka’s Health and Women’s Welfare Department has introduced mealworm farming in tribal villages across Kodagu to provide protein-rich, low-cost nutrition. Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) are trained to breed mealworms in controlled units. The harvested worms are dried and milled into protein powder to fortify school midday meals, community nutrition programs, and anganwadi snacks. Early adoption indicates a 15% increase in protein intake among children. Fear of insects is being tackled through cooking demonstrations embedding the powder into palatable dishes. The project situates environmental sustainability and health convergence in rural development planning.
