Punjab Builds Biogas-Powered Streetlights in Rural Pathways

In one of its rural electrification efforts, Punjab’s Energy Department has begun installing streetlights that run on household biogas plants linked to cattle sheds. The biogas plant powers an engine-generator, charging a battery that illuminates pathway lights for up to ten villages. These systems replace kerosene lamps or shaded street bulbs. Villagers report safer nighttime travel, especially for schoolchildren. Monthly operating costs remain under ₹500. Farmers benefit from manure management and free lighting. The pilot project in Bathinda is being monitored for scalability to other villages under the state’s green energy agenda.
