Kerala’s coastal entrepreneurs have begun converting discarded fishing nets into stylish footwear, belts, and bags. The project, run by coastal SHGs in Kollam and Kozhikode, partners with designers who provide training and designs. The nets are cleaned, dyed, and woven into durable material that is then stitched into lifestyle products. These are sold at beachside kiosks and online, especially to eco-conscious tourists. Over 2 tons of nets have been upcycled in six months. This reduces marine pollution and offers coastal women a sustainable livelihood. The products carry QR codes narrating the journey of transformation—from net to wearable item.
